The 30 km pothole studded gravel road immediately slipped our memory, when we cast a first glance into the Injisuthi valley. Thrown back to a land before our time, our view wanders along the green hills, the rugged cliffs of the surrounding mountains and an innocent gurgling stream beneath us. Ruffled clouds urging over the mountains, sloshing into the scenery, beams of sunlight breaking through, sprinkling spots of golden light over the land. The wind smells like adventure, carrying the sound of mysterious animals, hidden in the impenetrable tropical forests occupying the rifts around us.
Injisuthi is indeed a gem! The campsite is very quiet and the particular sites are separated with small hatches. The showers are clean but very stubborn…but some people say that alternating baths are very healthy. There are also 3 tented camps and fifteen four bed cabins. Five caves provide an ideal shelter for overnight hikers (Advance bookings is required).
What to do?
Go hiking, visit caves with famous San rock paintings, trout fishing, have a braai, take one billion pictures or just relax!
How to get there?
From Winterton, take the R600 direction Drakensberg World Heritage Site, follow the road for 13 km, turn left at the intersection. After 6 km turn right at the INJISUTHI sign. Follow the road for 31 km, try to avoid the many potholes!
From the N3, take the exit Nr 179 to Giants Castle/Escourt, after 23 km turn left at the INJISUTHI sign…31 km to go.
