Things get crazy by the beach sometimes. We headed out for a late afternoon surf in the seldomly warm and prestine turquoise coloured sea, only to be stopped in our tracks by one of the Shark Spotters on duty, warning us to some possible shark activity due to a nearby swarm of fish, which some trek fishers were about to net. We went out anyway, but got called back to   Read More ...

WHAT? South Africa is planning to build SIX brand new and ‘shiny’ NUCLAR POWER PLANTS… I grew up in Germany about 20km away from a nuclear power plant. An imginary line ran through the forest, just outside our village, which described a radius around the plant. In case of a fallout, everything inside this circle had no chance of survival! Phew, we were such lucky bastards to be juuuuuust outside!   Read More ...

It took 5 days and over two thousand people to fight the raging fire across Cape Town’s southern Peninsula. It broke out above Muizenberg on the 1.3.2015 and spread rapidly as strong winds carried the fire further, affecting 5 500 hectares of land. Definitely one of the scariest moments of our lives. A huge thanks to the marvelous people from the Volunteer Wildfire Services, Working on Fire and all   Read More ...

Now this is a throwback back to January 1980. A trip to Cape Town and of course up to the top of the iconic Table Mountain using the cableway. This cable car model was introduced in 1977 and ran until 1997 when it was replaced with the most recent model which has 360° revolving floors. The views are as spectacular now, as they were back in 1980. Happy 85th birthday   Read More ...

IMAGINE! What a wonderful motto for the 5th anual Cape Town Carnival. Once again over 2000 performers outdid themselves in creativity, colours and excitement!

„Zombies are fictional undead creatures regularly encountered in horror and fantasy themed works. They are typically depicted as mindless, reanimated corpses with a hunger for human flesh, and particularly for human brains in some depictions“(Wikipedia) The street-sellers, passersby and tourists on St. George’s Mall and Company’s Gardens were ripped out of their ordinary entity last weekend, when hordes of undead creatures dragged their rotten and bloody bodies through the streets   Read More ...

Lazing around in the city all day does not mean you have to relinquish wildlife! Just visit the Green Point Urban Park and experience vivid birdlife – the closer you look – the more you see. Vigorous coots extending their nest for their baldy offspring, a kingfisher hovering patiently above the water, fixing it’s eyes upon the unsuspecting frog and an ongoing exhausting air fight between the local geese and   Read More ...

A self-experiment. Strictly abiding the traffic rules for 1 month! South Africans mostly stretch the traffic rules across the limit, it is more a feeling you have, how fast you can drive. If a road feels like 100 km/h but the sign says 50, it is ok (as long as there is no speed trap standing in the way)! Signs want to assist you, rather than dictate terms…you just go   Read More ...

Isn’t it obvious to start surfing when you live in Cape Town, one of the hottest surf spots in the world? Also you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete, incredibly fearless or part of a super cool surf-gang to catch some waves. Being in the water for some hours every weekend, trying to jump on your board and avoid falling off for some seconds is so much fun. The   Read More ...

Crazy dressed up people with crazy self-made vehicles, jumping of a 6 meter high platform into freezing cold water, trying to „fly“ as far as possible…that’s what the Red Bull Flugtag is all about. 400 applicants, but only 46 were chosen to participate in this fabulous spectacle. With no wind and blue sky, the V&A Waterfront was packed with thousands of people, watching the wannabe pilots crashing their constructions, the   Read More ...

Some time ago we had the privelege to meet renowned writer and photographer Anton Crone at a small travelblogger meet and greet. Little did we know that just a few weeks after our encounter he was going to take us on an unforgettable journey into the townships that lie on the outskirts of Cape Town. We had never been to any of the townships but always have been curious of   Read More ...

Oh my god, there are robots everywhere, trying to interfere with my progress! For all of those who haven’t spent some time in South Africa, robots are not evil aliens from outer space, no, this is how they call their traffic lights. I have to say, I have never been a big fan of traffic lights (who is?), but in the past two years my experience with these little color-changing   Read More ...

Sometimes I wonder if these fabulous stories about these places you read about in guidebooks are real, or if they are just a figment of the author that gets paid by the local tourism office? Are the amazing things always so amazing? Unique places really so unique? The phenomenal truly a phenomena? Same goes for the Whale Route. You see the high gloss pictures of breaching whales in many magazines,   Read More ...

YES! Just have a look at this panorama picture  we took on a full moon night on top of lions head. Everybody who hasn’t walked up there really missed something! Sunset on the one side, moon rising on the other, the lights of the city waking up, creating a glowing carpet of light!

There is a new pizza guy in town. But this time, it really is something different. If you like these cute, tiny restaurants, lit by candle light, with romantic Italian music in the air and waiters attending you with every whim and fancy…STOP READING NOW! This place is different! There are a couple of reasons that make me say this. Ferdinando’s lays hidden somewhere in the Waterkant. You enter the place   Read More ...

The Rainbow Warrior has landed! Greenpeace’s famous environmental campaign ship – the “Rainbow Warrior” – docked in Cape Town’s harbour and invited interested visitors to enjoy a tour on one of the world’s most eco-friendly ships. We found out about the ship’s presence by one of our friends and immediately agreed to join her for a tour on the boat. In the early afternoon we drove to the famous V   Read More ...

There are times, when traveling and exploring doesn’t mean leaving the country or crossing the border. Sometimes this just means crossing the road and discovering the beauty of what lies outside your doorstep. In our case one of the many beautiful things to see and do is visiting the Green Point Urban park to take a little break from the daily chores and work-routine. The park officially opened early  2011and   Read More ...
